The Ankara summit previewed the Gulf's new security equation - Atlantic Council

The 2026 NATO Summit took place in Ankara, Türkiye, on July 7 and 8. It brought together the leaders of NATO member states and key international partners to discuss collective defence, military investment, support for Ukraine, and emerging global security challenges.

One of the summit’s main messages was the importance of unity among NATO members. The leaders reaffirmed their commitment to Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty, which states that an attack against one member is considered an attack against all. They emphasized that solidarity and collective strength remain essential for protecting the Alliance’s citizens.

Defence investment was another major topic. NATO members announced more than $50 billion in new military procurement and agreed to expand their collective manufacturing capacity. The Alliance plans to strengthen cooperation with the defence industry, reduce trade barriers among member countries, and accelerate the development of new military technologies.

The summit also focused on modernizing NATO’s capabilities. Members agreed to invest in integrated air and missile defence, precision-strike systems, drones, cybersecurity, space technology, artificial intelligence, and intelligence infrastructure. These investments are intended to help NATO respond more effectively to conventional attacks, hybrid threats, cyberattacks, terrorism, and other security risks.

Support for Ukraine remained an important part of the discussions. NATO members reaffirmed their support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. European allies and Canada pledged €70 billion in military equipment, assistance, and training for Ukraine in 2026. They also expressed their intention to maintain at least the same level of support in 2027.

The leaders identified Russia as a long-term threat to Euro-Atlantic security. They also discussed instability in other regions, international terrorism, strategic competition, and tensions involving Iran. NATO called for the protection of freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz and stated that Iran must not obtain nuclear weapons.

Hosting the summit was also diplomatically significant for Türkiye. It demonstrated the country’s strategic position within NATO and its role in European and regional security. The Ankara Summit was the second NATO summit hosted by Türkiye, following the 2004 meeting in Istanbul.

Overall, the 2026 Ankara Summit presented a roadmap for a stronger and more technologically advanced NATO. Its decisions showed that the Alliance intends to increase defence production, support Ukraine, address emerging threats, and maintain unity during a period of global uncertainty.
